    Window Film Energy Savings — How Much Can You Save on Your Bills?

    Energy savings from window film are real but highly site-specific. This page shows the arithmetic behind the estimate so you can sanity-check any number a contractor gives you.

    The basic calculation

    Solar heat gain through a window is approximately: glass area (sq ft) × peak solar intensity × SHGC. A film that takes an assembly from 0.70 SHGC to 0.28 SHGC removes about 60% of that gain.

    Cooling energy required to remove that heat is roughly the gain in BTU divided by the air conditioner's efficiency (SEER). Multiply by hours of sun exposure and your utility rate and you have an annual dollar figure.

    In practice a reasonable estimate for a sun-exposed Southern California home is a 5-15% reduction in annual cooling cost, and for a glass-heavy commercial building 10-20% of cooling cost. Buildings with large west or south glazing sit at the top of those ranges; buildings with small, shaded, north-facing windows sit at the bottom or below.

    • Orientation — west glass generates the worst peak load, then south, then east; north glass rarely justifies film on energy grounds alone
    • Existing glazing — film on old single-pane clear glass saves far more than film on modern Low-E double glazing

    • Utility rate structure — time-of-use plans with expensive 4-9pm peak periods magnify savings, because that is exactly when west glass is worst

    Los Angeles vs Las Vegas vs New York

    Los Angeles (CA climate zones 6-9): long cooling season, moderate humidity, high electricity rates. Film is a cooling-only play here, and the high per-kWh cost makes payback comparatively fast. Peak-hour time-of-use pricing rewards afternoon load reduction specifically.

    Las Vegas (hot-dry): the highest cooling load of the three, with intense direct sun and long summers. Absolute kWh savings are the largest, though lower Nevada energy rates partly offset that. Film is close to mandatory on unshaded west glass.

    New York (mixed-humid): a real heating season means winter solar gain has value, so a standard dark solar film can be counterproductive. The correct specification is a low-emissivity or spectrally selective film that cuts summer gain while limiting winter heat loss.

    Title 24, Part 6 sets prescriptive SHGC and U-factor requirements for altered fenestration, and window film is an accepted compliance path for existing buildings — often the only affordable one. Documented film performance data supports the compliance calculation.

    Utility programs change frequently. Historically Southern California Edison, LADWP and SoCalGas have run commercial custom-incentive programs where window film qualifies under measured or calculated energy savings, and PACE financing is available for commercial retrofits in most California counties. Verify current program status with the utility before relying on an incentive in a budget.

    NV Energy has historically offered commercial custom energy-efficiency incentives that can include window film as a calculated measure. Residential incentives in Nevada have focused more on HVAC and insulation, so most Las Vegas homeowners should model film on energy savings plus comfort rather than rebate value.

    Getting a defensible estimate

    For commercial projects, ask for a modelled savings report rather than a rule of thumb. Manufacturers publish energy modelling tools that take building location, glass type, orientation, glass area, HVAC efficiency and utility rate as inputs and return an annual kWh and dollar figure. That output is what belongs in a capital request.
