    Does Window Film Block UV Rays? Everything You Need to Know

    Yes — and this is the one benefit that is nearly identical across every quality film, clear or dark. Here is what the 99% figure means and why it matters more than most people assume.

    UV-A and UV-B are not the same problem

    UV-B (280-315 nm) is the shorter, higher-energy band responsible for sunburn. Ordinary window glass already blocks most of it, which is why you do not get sunburned sitting by a closed window.

    UV-A (315-400 nm) is the longer band. It penetrates deeper into skin, drives photoaging and contributes to skin cancer risk, and it passes through untreated glass almost unimpeded — commonly 60-75% transmission. This is the gap window film closes.

    How much UV does film block?

    Quality architectural film from LLumar, 3M, Hüper Optik or V-KOOL is rated at 99%+ rejection of UV in the 300-380 nm range. That figure holds for a clear 70% VLT film and for a dark 15% VLT film alike, because UV blocking comes from inhibitors in the adhesive and substrate, not from pigment.

    The practical consequence: you do not have to darken a room to get full UV protection. If UV is the reason for the project, choose the clearest film you like and the protection is already there.

    The SPF comparison

    Blocking 99% of UV transmission is broadly equivalent to SPF 100 in terms of the fraction of ultraviolet stopped, and dermatology organizations have long recommended UV-filtering window film for people with photosensitive conditions or a history of skin cancer.

    The comparison is imperfect — SPF is a measured biological endpoint for UV-B on skin, while film ratings are optical transmission measurements — but the order of magnitude is right, and unlike sunscreen the film never needs reapplication.

    The one-sided exposure problem

    Long-term studies of professional drivers have documented markedly more photoaging on the window-side of the face and arms, and the same asymmetry shows up in people who sit beside the same office or home window for years. Interior glass exposure is cumulative and easy to overlook precisely because it does not burn.

    UV, fading, and the limits of a UV number

    UV causes roughly 40% of fabric, floor, and artwork fading. Visible light contributes about 25%, heat about 25%, and humidity and indoor pollutants the remaining 10%.

    So a film that blocks 99% of UV addresses the largest single cause of fading but not all of it. Meaningfully slowing fade means also reducing visible light and heat, which is why a solar-control film outperforms a purely clear UV film for protecting a rug or a painting.

    Does UV protection wear out?

    The UV inhibitor package is consumed slowly as it does its job, which is one reason films have finite service lives. In practice, ceramic and nano-ceramic films hold 99% UV rejection through 15-20 years of Southern California exposure. Cheap dyed film loses appearance long before it loses UV performance — when it turns purple, replace it for reasons of looks and heat, not UV.
